North Carolina Lieutenant Governor Mark Robinson received treatment for second-degree burns at Northern Regional Hospital after an incident at a campaign event in Mount Airy on Friday night.
Mike Lonergan, the communications director for Robinson’s gubernatorial campaign, reported that Robinson is in good spirits, grateful for the well wishes, and eager to return to campaigning the following morning.
The burns resulted from an accident at an automotive show, with no foul play suspected, according to a law enforcement source.
Robinson, the Republican nominee for governor, had been making various campaign stops throughout the state on Friday, concluding at the Mayberry Truck Show and Parade, where the incident took place.
The campaign has not released additional details about the event.
Robinson has ongoing fallout from his past controversial comments on a pornography website’s message board. Following this, several notable Republicans, including former President Donald Trump, distanced themselves from Robinson, who was not mentioned during Trump’s recent campaign visit to North Carolina, despite having previously endorsed him.
Additionally, national Republican groups have withdrawn financial support for Robinson, and several campaign officials have resigned, including his top aide.
As he continues his campaign, new polls indicate that Robinson is falling behind, with Democrat Josh Stein leading him 53% to 36% among likely voters.
