Drake Hogestyn, best known for his role as John Black on the long-running soap opera Days of Our Lives, has passed away at the age of 70. His family announced the news via the show’s official Instagram account, revealing that he had been fighting pancreatic cancer.
In their statement, the family expressed deep sorrow over Hogestyn’s passing, noting that he confronted his diagnosis with remarkable courage and resilience.
After an incredible battle, he died peacefully surrounded by loved ones. They described him as an outstanding husband, father, and actor who cherished performing for the Days audience alongside a talented cast and crew.
Hogestyn’s 71st birthday would have been this Sunday.
Alison Sweeney, known for her role as Sami Brady, remembered him as “an incredible man” in a tribute on X, highlighting his humor, generosity, and dedication to his craft. She added, “I will miss him terribly and treasure every story, every joke, and every hug.”
Kristian Alfonso, who portrayed Hope Brady, described him as a “passionate human being” who was kind and generous, thanking him for the love he shared both on and off set.
Hogestyn, originally from Fort Wayne, Indiana, began his career in minor league baseball but transitioned to acting after injuries ended his sports career. He made his debut on Days of Our Lives in 1986, portraying John Black, a character who was a police officer, private investigator, and secret agent, and who formed a notable soap supercouple with Marlena Evans, played by Deidre Hall.
Throughout his career, Hogestyn, a two-time winner of the Soap Opera Digest award for hottest male actor, remained with the NBC and Peacock soap until his death, taking a brief hiatus in the 2000s. He also starred in the 1980s series Seven Brides for Seven Brothers and made guest appearances on shows such as Otherworld and Criminal Minds. Most recently, he appeared in the 2020 Hallmark film Christmas Tree Lane.
