Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu praised the death of Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah on Saturday but cautioned that it would not end the ongoing conflict in the Middle East.
Netanyahu noted that while significant progress had been made, the fight was far from over, adding that Hezbollah had been severely hit by Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) strikes, yet this alone would not be enough.
Hezbollah confirmed Nasrallah’s death, stating he was killed in an Israeli airstrike on Friday in Beirut. The Israeli military labeled the operation as a “targeted strike” on Hezbollah’s headquarters. Alongside Nasrallah, Ali Karki, another senior Hezbollah commander, was also killed.
The death of Nasrallah, Hezbollah’s leader for over 30 years, is seen as a significant blow to the group. Lebanese analyst Ronnie Chatah remarked that Hezbollah’s dominance would be forever changed, predicting a smaller, restructured organization in the future.
President Joe Biden called Nasrallah’s death “a measure of justice,” reiterating his support for Israel while calling for a ceasefire and a de-escalation of the wider conflict in the region.
