Pastor Enoch Adeboye, the General Overseer of the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG), has issued an apology for a previous statement in which he claimed that Christians who do not pay tithes would not go to heaven.
The apology, which circulated in a viral video, was made during a sermon at the church’s ongoing National Youth Convention at the RCCG Redemption City.
Adeboye acknowledged his mistake, saying sorry, that’s wrong. He clarified that the Bible does not state that non-tithers will be excluded from heaven. He emphasized that the Bible teaches peace and holiness as the path to seeing God.
The pastor’s initial statement, made in July, had sparked widespread discussion online, as he had declared that anyone who failed to tithe would not enter heaven.
While justifying his apology, Adeboye noted that one can be both right and wrong at the same time, using scientific advancements about the nature of light as an analogy.
He also highlighted an experience from a Kenneth Hagin convention in the U.S., urging Christians to give generously and not be stingy in their offerings to God.
