Honda Motor is recalling 1,693,199 vehicles in the U.S. due to potential steering issues.
According to documents released by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the worm wheel in the steering gearbox may have been improperly manufactured, leading it to swell during use. This could thin out the grease layer between the worm wheel and worm gear, causing increased friction. Additionally, the spring preload, which measures spring compression, was set too high in affected vehicles. These issues may make steering more difficult, increasing the risk of accidents.
Warning signs include unusual noises and a sticky feeling when turning the steering wheel.
The recall affects several Honda models in the U.S., including 2023-2025 Acura Integra models, 2022-2025 Honda Civics, 2023-2025 Honda CR-Vs, and 2023-2025 Honda HR-Vs.
Honda advises affected vehicle owners to visit an authorized dealer for repairs once they receive a notice. Repairs will involve adjusting or replacing the worm gear spring and adding grease if needed, all free of charge. Owner notifications are expected to be mailed by November 18, 2024.
