Following Tennessee State University’s (TSU) homecoming parade, a shooting erupted between two groups, resulting in the death of a 24-year-old man and injuries to nine others, including two 14-year-olds and a 12-year-old.
The incident occurred around 5:10 p.m. on Jefferson Street, after the parade had ended and as people were heading to an NCAA Division I game between the Tennessee State Tigers and Eastern Illinois Panthers.
The shooting took place off-campus, according to a statement from TSU.
Despite a heavy police presence in the area, which was crowded with people, the gunfire came as a shock.
Police spokesman Don Aaron explained that shots were fired from both sides of the street.
Among the victims, the injuries ranged from minor grazes to critical conditions, although the three minors were reported to be in stable condition.
Police are continuing their investigation and suspect one of the injured individuals may have been one of the shooters. They are interviewing witnesses and have spoken with some of the hospitalized victims. “We are confident that things are beginning to come together,” said Aaron.
