Former Aviation Minister Femi Fani-Kayode announced the passing of his longtime special assistant, Ndifreke Mark, on Sunday in Abuja.
Mr. Mark, who had worked with Fani-Kayode for 34 years, was discovered unresponsive in a hotel room after attending mass at the Catholic Church of the Assumption in Asokoro.
In a statement released on Monday, Fani-Kayode provided details about the incident, noting that police investigations revealed Mr. Mark checked into Mildy Lodge and Apartments in Garki, where he was last seen alive. “According to the police, he took a room at the hotel and spent time there with another individual, before collapsing and dying in that person’s presence,” Fani-Kayode explained.
Both the individual and the hotel receptionist are currently in police custody, while the hotel manager and owner have been questioned.
Fani-Kayode has called for a “full criminal investigation” and an autopsy. He mentioned that Mr. Mark, a devoted Catholic, had left home early Sunday morning to attend mass and was declared dead upon arrival at Asokoro District Hospital, where his body was later stored in the morgue.
The hotel has been closed for two days as part of the ongoing investigation, and the room where Mr. Mark was found remains sealed.
Fani-Kayode expressed his condolences to Mr. Mark’s family, meeting with his wife, Patience Ndifreke-Mark, and his uncle, Mr. Clement Mathias, to inform them of his commitment to seeking justice if any foul play is confirmed.
Describing Mr. Mark as “like a son” and a trusted confidant, Fani-Kayode highlighted their shared dreams and struggles over the years. He remembered Mr. Mark, 52, as a kind and compassionate person who brought joy to others and was incapable of causing harm. “I will never forget him; although he has passed, he lives on in our hearts,” he said.
Fani-Kayode expressed his trust in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command to conduct a thorough investigation and assured Mr. Mark’s widow and children of his support during this difficult time. He concluded his statement by thanking those who reached out to him during his period of mourning, praying for Mr. Mark’s soul to rest in peace and for comfort for his family.
