A suspected drunk driver was caught driving the wrong way on an interstate in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, towards Vice President Kamala Harris’ motorcade.
The incident occurred around 8:20 p.m. on Monday on I-94 near the Marquette Interchange, as reported by the Milwaukee County Sheriff’s Office.
A 55-year-old man was seen driving an SUV westbound in the eastbound lanes when he neared Harris’ motorcade, nearly colliding with one of its vehicles.
As the vehicle got closer, deputies intervened, determined the driver was impaired, and took him into custody on preliminary charges of operating while intoxicated and recklessly endangering safety, though formal charges have yet to be filed.
Upon being informed that he nearly hit a vehicle in the motorcade, the driver expressed surprise and claimed he had no memory of entering the freeway or coming close to another vehicle.
He stated that he had no intention of harming Harris or her campaign associates.
According to the arrest report, he failed multiple field sobriety tests and had an open beer can in his vehicle. The man remained in jail without bail as of Tuesday night, and fortunately, no injuries were reported.
The U.S. Secret Service confirmed it was aware of the incident and expressed gratitude to the deputies for their prompt action.
Secret Service spokesperson Joe Routh stated, “We are grateful to the Milwaukee Sheriff’s Office for their response which allowed them to stop the motorist and take the driver into custody for DUI.”
