Amazon is ending its same-day delivery service, Amazon Today, which let customers order from local brick-and-mortar retailers for quick delivery.
The service will mostly close by December 2, with some partners continuing until January 24, 2025.
A company spokesperson said the decision was made because of overlap between Amazon Today and its other fast delivery options, like Same-Day and One-Day Delivery.
Amazon Today, launched in 2022, connected shoppers to local stores like Office Depot and Petco, using Flex drivers for fast deliveries.
The shutdown affects about 175 employees, most of whom will be offered other roles within Amazon.
This move aligns with Amazon CEO Andy Jassy’s broader cost-cutting efforts, which include over 27,000 layoffs since 2022. The company will still offer Same-Day Delivery in over 120 U.S. metro areas, and recently announced plans to add 250,000 roles across its U.S. operations.
