Unknown attackers have killed at least 40 Chadian soldiers in an overnight assault on a military base in western Chad.
President Idriss Deby visited the base in Barkaram, an island in the Lake Chad region, on Monday morning and announced a military operation to pursue the attackers.
Chad has faced ongoing insurgencies near its border with Nigeria.
In March, an attack attributed to Boko Haram claimed the lives of seven soldiers, raising concerns about renewed violence in the Lake Chad area.
This follows a period of relative peace after a successful 2020 military campaign by Chad’s army targeting extremist bases.
