Brooklyn Center is reviving its plan to establish a new downtown area, a vision that had been paused in recent years but is now back on track.
The city’s “Opportunity Site,” an 80-acre area north of Highway 100 and east of Shingle Creek Parkway, is set for redevelopment.
City Economic Development Manager Ian Alexander stated that the aim is to transform unused areas, like parking lots, into economic assets. The site, which includes a former Target store now being demolished, has faced delays due to the COVID-19 pandemic and civil unrest.
On October 28, the city council approved a master plan for the project, which Planning Manager Ginny McIntosh says is a key step in attracting developers. She noted that while market conditions are unpredictable, the city has been actively seeking grants, support, and developer interest so that, when the market is favorable, they’ll be ready to proceed.
