On Wednesday, President Joe Biden called former President Donald Trump to congratulate him on his presidential victory, according to a White House statement.
Biden expressed his commitment to facilitating a smooth transition and highlighted the need to unite the country. He also invited Trump to meet with him at the White House.
Trump’s campaign spokesperson, Steven Cheung, confirmed the meeting would occur soon, adding that Trump appreciated Biden’s call and the invitation for a smooth transition.
Biden also congratulated Vice President Kamala Harris on her “historic campaign” during a phone call. Later, after Harris’ concession speech, Biden praised her as a “tremendous partner and public servant” with integrity, courage, and character. He commended her leadership during a difficult campaign and reiterated that choosing her as his running mate was the best decision he made. Biden expressed confidence in Harris’ ongoing role in shaping America’s future.
Trump and Harris also spoke by phone, with Harris assuring Trump that she and Biden would ensure a peaceful transition of power, unlike in 2020. Biden is scheduled to address the election results and the transition on Thursday.
Harris’ defeat followed Trump’s victories in the crucial swing states of Pennsylvania, Georgia, and Wisconsin, and he later secured Michigan.
