In his first speech following Vice President Kamala Harris’s defeat to former President Donald Trump, President Joe Biden emphasized unity, stating, “You can’t love your country only when you win.”
Speaking from the White House Rose Garden on Thursday, he urged Americans to embrace one another as fellow citizens, regardless of disagreements, and announced his administration’s plans to collaborate with Trump’s team to ensure a smooth transition.
Biden highlighted the integrity of the election, asserting that it was “honest, fair, and transparent,” and expressed confidence that “the will of the people always prevail.” He also commended Harris’s “inspiring campaign,” recognizing her commitment and integrity.
Reflecting on his administration’s achievements, Biden mentioned the progress on infrastructure projects that he believes will significantly benefit struggling communities, saying, “We’re leaving behind the strongest economy in the world.” Although he acknowledged ongoing challenges, Biden noted that “together, we’ve changed America for the better.”
Encouraging continued involvement, Biden advised Americans to stay engaged and hopeful, stating, “Setbacks are unavoidable, but giving up is unforgivable.”
Biden also reaffirmed that choosing Harris as his vice-presidential candidate in 2020 was his “best decision,” praising her as an embodiment of the American story.
Both Biden and Harris have since congratulated Trump on his victory, with Harris officially conceding, while urging continued action toward justice and freedom. Trump secured swing states like North Carolina, Pennsylvania, Georgia, Wisconsin, and Michigan, while the final results for Nevada and Arizona remain unannounced.
Additionally, Republicans gained control of the Senate, and the House results are pending.
