Mariah Carey is set to be questioned by lawyers regarding claims made in her memoir about her brother Morgan, who alleges she falsely accused him of drug dealing shortly after the deaths of their mother and sister.
A videotaped deposition is scheduled for January 17 in New York, where Mariah will testify under oath in Morgan’s defamation lawsuit.
Morgan filed the lawsuit in March 2021, asserting that Mariah’s autobiography, The Meaning of Mariah Carey, contained false and defamatory statements about him, including allegations of violence, drug dealing, and imprisonment. He denies all accusations, and his legal team claims the book caused significant emotional distress and harm to his reputation.
The lawsuit references several statements in the book, such as Mariah’s claim that Morgan had been violent toward her and had worked as a drug dealer in a New York nightclub in the late 1980s. Morgan denies these claims and seeks damages for emotional distress.
While a judge dismissed most of the lawsuit in 2022, two claims—about Morgan being a drug dealer and implying he had been in prison—were allowed to proceed.
Mariah, in an affidavit, defended the accuracy of her statements, citing information she received from a photographer, a hairdresser, and their mother.
Morgan’s lawyers now intend to question Mariah in January about these claims and demand evidence supporting her allegations, including the identities of the sources she mentioned.
The legal battle comes amid personal family tragedies, with Mariah and Morgan losing their mother and sister on the same day in August 2024.
Morgan expressed his disappointment at learning of their deaths through Mariah’s lawyer, rather than from her directly.
Mariah had also faced a lawsuit from their late sister, Alison, who claimed Mariah’s book made false and damaging statements about her.
