Federal law enforcement agents have raided a hotel in Queens owned by businesswoman Weihong Hu, who is linked to potential illegal campaign contributions to New York City Mayor Eric Adams.
The search, conducted on Thursday, is part of an ongoing investigation by federal prosecutors from the Eastern District of New York.
The hotel, which hosts a shelter for formerly incarcerated individuals, has received millions in city contracts.
Hu was previously investigated for securing lucrative city contracts after hosting fundraisers for Adams.
Hu’s attorney, Kevin Tung, speculated that the raid might be connected to the shelter program’s participants, suggesting it could have nothing to do with Hu personally.
The shelter program is run by Housing Works, a social service nonprofit, which clarified that the raid did not target their operations or clients.
Earlier this year, federal authorities raided the homes of Winnie Greco, a former aide to Adams with ties to Hu. Greco had lived in Hu’s hotel and attended a fundraiser hosted by Hu, which raised questions about illegal campaign donations. Greco resigned from her position, and through her lawyer, declined to comment on the allegations.
Mayor Adams’ spokesperson, Kayla Mamelak Altus, emphasized the administration’s commitment to the law and cooperation with law enforcement.
Tung, Hu’s lawyer, denied the allegations of wrongdoing, asserting that most of the claims were untrue.
