President-elect Trump’s pick to head the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), Hillsborough County Sheriff Chad Chronister, announced on Tuesday that he is withdrawing from consideration just days after his nomination.
Chronister shared in a post on X that he decided to remain in his current role overseeing Hillsborough County, citing the ongoing work he has for the local community. He expressed gratitude for the nomination and the support he received but emphasized his commitment to his sheriff duties.
Trump had nominated Chronister on Saturday, praising his extensive law enforcement experience. Chronister’s background includes service with the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office, training at the FBI National Academy, and roles on various security and human trafficking task forces.
This marks the second recent withdrawal of a Trump nominee. Former Rep. Matt Gaetz, chosen as attorney general, also stepped down after facing scrutiny over past investigations.
