A masked gunman ambushed and killed Brian Thompson, CEO of UnitedHealthcare, outside a Manhattan hotel on Wednesday morning.
The assailant used ammunition marked with words like “deny,” “defend,” and “depose,” which authorities believe may reference alleged tactics used by insurance companies to avoid claim payouts.
Thompson, 50, was on his way to an investor conference when he was targeted near prominent landmarks like Radio City Music Hall and the Museum of Modern Art.
Surveillance footage captured the shooter’s actions, including his escape on a bike, which may have been pre-positioned as part of a getaway plan. The suspect, described as experienced with firearms and using a silencer, fled toward Central Park.
Police are analyzing DNA and fingerprints from items left near the scene and have offered a $10,000 reward for information leading to his arrest.
Law enforcement is investigating possible motives, including threats Thompson had reportedly received related to insurance disputes. His wife, Paulette Thompson, confirmed these threats but did not have specific details. Despite this, the Minneapolis suburb police where Thompson lived reported no prior incidents.
UnitedHealthcare, a major U.S. health insurer, expressed shock and grief, describing Thompson as a respected leader.
The company’s annual investor conference was cut short following the incident. Authorities continue to search for the masked gunman as the investigation unfolds.
