The manifesto of Luigi Mangione, who is charged with the shooting of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson, has been made public and verified as authentic by law enforcement.
In the manifesto, Mangione claims he acted alone, apologizing for any “strife or traumas” caused by his actions. However, parts of the text are reportedly difficult to decipher due to his handwriting.
The document, discovered on Mangione at the time of his arrest at a McDonald’s in Altoona, Pennsylvania, on Monday, provides insight into his motivations.
Mangione addressed federal authorities directly in the document, stating his respect for their work and confirming he acted independently. He described his actions as a result of “elementary social engineering” and a basic understanding of engineering and design tools. While apologizing for the harm caused, he justified his actions as a response to what he described as systemic issues within the U.S. healthcare system.
Mangione criticized UnitedHealthcare and the broader healthcare industry, citing high costs and poor outcomes as evidence of corruption and greed.
The manifesto also referenced other critics of the healthcare system and expressed frustration at what Mangione perceived as unchecked corporate power. He admitted he was not fully qualified to elaborate on the issue but emphasized the need for drastic action.
Law enforcement in Pennsylvania also revealed that Mangione was carrying fake identification and cash when arrested. Authorities in New York are investigating the case further, with additional updates expected as the legal proceedings continue.
