An 18-year-old British man, Marcus Fakana, has been sentenced to one year in prison in Dubai for being involved with a 17-year-old British girl while they were on holiday with their families. Ninaworldnews had earlier reported.
The relationship began in September, but after they returned home, the girl’s mother found photos and messages about the relationship and reported it to Dubai police. Fakana was arrested at his hotel. In Dubai, laws prohibit sexual activity with anyone under 18.
The group Detained in Dubai called the sentence unfair and said Fakana plans to appeal. They also mentioned that he feels unsupported by the British government.
A UK official confirmed they are offering support to Fakana and staying in contact with his family.
Fakana has been unable to leave Dubai since September and had hoped to return home soon.
Radha Stirling, the founder of Detained in Dubai, criticized how the case was managed, stating it should have been treated as a less serious matter.
The family has appealed to the ruler of Dubai for leniency.
Stirling also mentioned that Fakana would be sent back to the UK after his sentence is complete. She believes the law in this case is too strict, arguing that a year in prison for two young tourists is too harsh.
Fakana’s parents have returned to London without their son and are struggling to manage the situation.
