President-elect Donald Trump has expressed his support for abolishing daylight saving time, calling it “inconvenient” and “very costly.” His remarks came via a post on Truth Social, where he stated, “The Republican Party will use its best efforts to eliminate Daylight Saving Time, which has a small but strong constituency, but shouldn’t!”
This marks a shift from his 2019 position when he tweeted that making daylight saving time permanent was acceptable to him. The renewed push aligns with advocacy from his Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) directors, Tesla and X CEO Elon Musk, and businessman Vivek Ramaswamy, both of whom have called for ending the time change. Musk recently responded to a poll on X, saying, “Looks like the people want to abolish the annoying time change,” while Ramaswamy added, “It’s inefficient & easy to change.”
Eliminating daylight saving time would require congressional approval, and while similar proposals have been introduced in recent years, they have yet to gain sufficient traction.
