Two people killed, and six others injured in a shooting at Abundant Life Christian School in Madison, Wisconsin, according to police. Initially, authorities reported a higher death toll but later revised their information.
The suspect, a juvenile believed to be a student, used a handgun and is also deceased, police said. Victims’ injuries range from minor to life-threatening. Officers responded to the scene at 10:57 a.m., but no police officers discharged their weapons.
Eyewitness John Diaz De Leon described a massive law enforcement presence and students being evacuated from the school. “I never saw so many police cars in my life – just blue and red lights lining the school.”
The school, which has approximately 390 students from kindergarten through 12th grade, is working to reunite students with their families.
Wisconsin Superintendent of Public Instruction Jill Underly called for action, saying, “We must do more to protect our children and educators.” Governor Tony Evers and Senators Tammy Baldwin and Ron Johnson expressed condolences and support for the victims and the school community.
President Joe Biden has been briefed on the incident, according to the White House. Investigations are ongoing.
