Uber and its CEO, Dara Khosrowshahi, have each donated $1 million to support Donald Trump’s upcoming inauguration in January, according to reports.

This move has drawn attention due to Khosrowshahi’s past criticism of Trump, particularly regarding the 2017 travel ban targeting six Muslim-majority countries.

Khosrowshahi, who fled Iran as a child, has spoken passionately about his belief in the American Dream and criticized policies he perceives as undermining it. “The president should be for democracy and the Constitution, not against it,” he said.

Notably, this donation marks Khosrowshahi’s largest ever political contribution, contrasting with his lack of support for Joe Biden’s 2021 inauguration. The WSJ suggests the gesture highlights Uber’s desire to align with the incoming Republican administration.

Complicating matters, Uber’s chief legal officer, Tony West, is Vice President Kamala Harris’s brother-in-law. West took a leave of absence to campaign for Harris during the recent election but has since returned to his position at Uber.
