A missile launched from Yemen struck Tel Aviv overnight into Saturday, marking a rare failure of Israel’s air defense systems.
The missile hit the southern Jaffa area of the city, and despite sirens warning of the attack, attempts to intercept it were unsuccessful. Emergency services reported over a dozen people injured, primarily from glass shards, though there were no fatalities.
The Iran-backed Houthi rebels in Yemen claimed responsibility for firing a hypersonic ballistic missile, named “Palestine 2,” at an Israeli military target in Jaffa. They stated that the missile hit its target precisely and that Israel’s defenses failed to intercept it.
Since the conflict between Israel and Hamas began in October 2023, Israel has been targeted by missiles from Hezbollah, the Houthis, and other Iran-aligned groups.
Despite most of these projectiles being intercepted, incidents like this highlight the ongoing threat.
The Houthis have also targeted ships in the Red Sea, calling these attacks a response to the Gaza conflict.
The situation in Gaza has led to massive casualties, with Israel’s military actions in Gaza and Lebanon causing tens of thousands of deaths.
