The U.S. military conducted airstrikes in Yemen’s capital, Sanaa, targeting missile storage and command facilities operated by Iran-backed Houthi militants.

U.S. Central Command reported additional strikes on Houthi drones and an anti-ship cruise missile over the Red Sea using assets such as F/A-18 fighter jets.

A “friendly fire” incident occurred when the guided missile cruiser USS Gettysburg mistakenly shot down an F/A-18 fighter jet from the USS Harry S. Truman. Both crew members ejected safely, with one sustaining minor injuries.

The strikes followed a Houthi ballistic missile attack on Tel Aviv, Israel, which injured over a dozen people in a park.

The Houthis, who have been attacking international shipping and Israel since the Gaza war began in October 2023, claim to act in solidarity with Palestinians.

The U.S. stated the airstrikes aimed to disrupt Houthi operations, including attacks on U.S. Navy ships and commercial vessels in the Red Sea region.

Since November 2023, Houthi missile attacks have damaged several ships and sunk two vessels.

Operation Prosperity Guardian, launched by the U.S., UK, and other nations, aims to protect Red Sea shipping lanes.

Meanwhile, Israel continues to retaliate against Houthi military targets, including ports and energy infrastructure, following the Houthis’ threats to escalate attacks until the Gaza conflict ends.
