The Minnesota Department of Health has reported over 40 norovirus outbreaks in December, nearly double the typical number.
This foodborne illness causes symptoms such as vomiting, diarrhea, and stomach cramps. Senior Epidemiologist Amy Saupe explains that norovirus can mutate over time, with people gaining short-term immunity, but they may eventually encounter a different strain.
She notes that this season could be particularly severe for norovirus.
To prevent exposure and contamination, Saupe advises frequent handwashing, as some strains of norovirus can resist hand sanitizers.
