On Wednesday, President-elect Trump posted a lengthy message on Christmas Day, telling the 37 individuals who had their death sentences commuted by President Biden to “go to hell.”
In a post on Truth Social, Trump referred to the 37 as “the most violent criminals” who had committed heinous acts, such as killing, raping, and plundering, and condemned Biden for granting them pardons. “I refuse to wish a Merry Christmas to those lucky ‘souls,'” Trump wrote. “Instead, I’ll say, GO TO HELL!”
On Monday, President Biden commuted the sentences of 37 federal death row inmates, converting their sentences to life in prison—a decision Trump has strongly criticized.
In the same Christmas message, Trump also addressed foreign relations, focusing on China, Panama, Canada, and Greenland. He accused China of “illegally” operating the Panama Canal, claiming the U.S. should regain control. “Merry Christmas to all, including to the wonderful soldiers of China, who are lovingly, but illegally, operating the Panama Canal,” he wrote, adding that the U.S. has invested billions in its maintenance while having no say in its operations.
Trump also directed comments at Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, suggesting that if Canada became the 51st U.S. state, its citizens would see significant tax reductions and economic growth. He also spoke about Greenland, emphasizing its importance for U.S. national security and reaffirming the U.S.’s intention to maintain a presence there.
