Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt have finally reached a divorce settlement, putting an end to their long and contentious eight-year legal battle. The couple officially finalized the divorce paperwork on December 30.
According to Jolie’s divorce lawyer, James Simon, she feels “relieved” that this chapter is over but is also “exhausted” from the prolonged process. He explained that since filing for divorce in 2016, Jolie, 49, has focused on helping her family heal.
Jolie and Pitt have agreed to attend a settlement conference or mediation and are requesting a jury trial, which could take 10-15 days. Despite the difficult period, sources say Jolie has been trying to stay positive and does not speak ill of Pitt, either publicly or privately.
The couple’s six children, Maddox, Pax, Zahara, Shiloh, Vivienne, and Knox, have seen the challenges of having power and privilege overshadow their voices, according to sources. Jolie has encouraged them to focus on changing laws instead of discussing personal issues publicly.
Jolie filed for divorce in September 2016, after two years of marriage and a decade-long relationship. Prior to the filing, there were reports of an alleged incident in which Pitt became physically abusive on a private plane, but he was never charged.
While Jolie could have pressed charges, sources say her priority was ensuring their children received the support they needed to heal.
Pitt, now 61, is in a relationship with jewelry designer Ines de Ramon, 34. Despite the ongoing legal battle, Jolie and Pitt were legally declared single in 2019.
