The Nigerian government has issued a travel advisory, urging its citizens to reconsider visiting Australia due to rising security concerns linked to an increase in Islamophobia and antisemitism in certain cities.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs issued the warning, citing reports of discrimination, harassment, and verbal abuse targeting foreigners, particularly in the context of recent spikes in hate crimes.
The Acting Spokesperson, Kimiebi Imomotimi Ebienfa, explained that while Australia is generally known for its multiculturalism, the recent surge in antisemitic and Islamophobic incidents, especially in certain areas, has heightened the risk of violence.
Ebienfa highlighted a troubling incident in Sydney’s Woollahra suburb in December 2024, where a car was set on fire and anti-Israel graffiti was sprayed on buildings. This event was part of a broader rise in such incidents linked to international tensions.
Nigerians are advised to be mindful of these dynamics and take extra precautions to ensure their safety.
The Ministry also urged Nigerians in Australia who experience or witness any racist attacks or harassment to contact the Nigerian High Commission in Canberra.
This travel advisory follows a similar warning issued by the Australian government, which cautioned its citizens against traveling to Nigeria due to ongoing security threats such as terrorism, kidnapping, and civil unrest.
The Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade recommended reconsidering travel to Nigeria because of the volatile situation.
