Nigeria’s President, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, arrived in Accra, Ghana, on Monday to attend the January 7, 2025, inauguration of Ghana’s President-elect, John Dramani Mahama.
Tinubu, who departed Lagos earlier that day, was welcomed at Kotoka International Airport by Julius Debra, Chief of Staff to outgoing President Nana Akufo-Addo.
Attending in his capacity as Chairman of the ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State and Government, Tinubu joins other African leaders for this historic occasion. Mahama, Ghana’s former president from 2011 to 2017, returns to power after winning the December 2024 elections, succeeding President Akufo-Addo, who has served since 2017.
The Nigerian delegation includes the Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu, and other senior officials.
Special Adviser to President Tinubu on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, had earlier confirmed the visit, noting that the trip was at Mahama’s invitation following his December visit to Tinubu.
Onanuga’s statement emphasized the personal relationship between Tinubu and Mahama, as well as the strong bilateral ties between Nigeria and Ghana. It also highlighted Tinubu’s role as ECOWAS Chairman in supporting regional cooperation and solidarity among African nations.
