On Sunday, Trump took to Truth Social to sharply criticize special counsel Jack Smith, calling him a “disgrace” following Smith’s resignation from the Department of Justice.

Smith, who was appointed by Attorney General Merrick Garland in November 2022 to investigate Trump’s role in the January 6 Capitol riot and the mishandling of classified documents, submitted his final confidential report on January 7, 2025, and officially stepped down on January 10, according to a court filing.

“Deranged Jack Smith was fired today by the DOJ. He is a disgrace to himself, his family, and his Country. After spending over $100,000,000 on the Witch Hunt against TRUMP, he left town empty-handed!” Trump wrote in his post.

Smith’s resignation comes shortly before the release of his report, which Garland has pledged to make as public as legally possible. A federal appeals court judge recently rejected efforts to block the report’s release, and Garland indicated it may be published before Trump takes office next week.

Following his presidential election victory in November, Trump’s legal battles shifted dramatically. Smith filed motions to close his cases against the president-elect, including a request to drop charges related to the Capitol riot. In earlier motions, he sought to vacate all deadlines, signaling an end to the legal proceedings after Trump’s win.

Trump, who has long criticized the investigations as politically motivated, reiterated his stance after the cases were dismissed. “These cases, like all of the other cases I have been forced to go through, are empty and lawless, and should never have been brought,” he posted on Truth Social. “It was a political hijacking and a low point in the history of our country. Yet, I persevered, against all odds, and WON. MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN!”
