Rudy Giuliani, former New York City mayor and personal attorney to Donald Trump, reached a legal settlement on Thursday, agreeing to cease defaming two Georgia election workers, Ruby Freeman and her daughter Wandrea Moss, whom he falsely accused of aiding in the theft of the 2020 election. The settlement also allows Giuliani to retain his Florida condominium and Manhattan apartment.
Freeman and Moss, who previously won a $148 million judgment after Giuliani’s false claims that they manipulated ballots for Joe Biden, confirmed they received compensation as part of the agreement, though the details were not disclosed.
This settlement prevents Giuliani from facing a non-jury civil trial that was scheduled to begin Thursday. The trial would have determined whether Giuliani would have to surrender his Palm Beach condo and three New York Yankees World Series rings to Freeman and Moss.
In a statement read by his lawyer, Giuliani said both parties had agreed to avoid defamation in the future. He also clarified that his son Andrew Giuliani could keep the rings, which were given as gifts.
Freeman and Moss, who had been defamed by Giuliani’s accusations of ballot tampering, expressed relief in their statement, saying the settlement would allow them to move forward with their lives.
The women had filed a 2021 lawsuit claiming Giuliani damaged their reputations by spreading false information about them.
Giuliani, who had faced contempt charges in this case for failing to comply with court orders, has also pleaded not guilty to criminal charges related to his efforts to overturn the 2020 election results.
