Beatrice Ekweremadu, the wife of former Deputy Senate President Ike Ekweremadu, has returned to Nigeria. She arrived in Abuja on January 22, following her release from a UK prison.
In May 2023, a UK court convicted Ekweremadu, his wife, and Dr. Obinna Obeta on charges related to organ trafficking. The court had found them guilty of conspiring to traffick a Nigerian trader to the UK for the purpose of harvesting his kidney, a violation of the UK’s Modern Slavery Act 2015. This case marked the first of its kind under that law.
Senator Ekweremadu was sentenced to 10 years in prison, while Beatrice received a six-year sentence, despite raising health concerns during the trial. Dr. Obeta, who assisted the couple in the organ trafficking scheme, was also sentenced to 10 years.
The news of Beatrice Ekweremadu’s release has sparked celebrations among her kinsmen, as seen in a viral video.
