On Thursday morning, comedians Bowen Yang and Rachel Sennott revealed the 2025 Academy Award nominations during a live broadcast from Beverly Hills. Netflix’s Emilia Pérez, a musical about a trans drug lord in Mexico, leads the pack with 13 nominations, including Best Picture and recognition for Karla Sofía Gascón, Zoe Saldaña, and director Jacques Audiard.
Wicked and The Brutalist follow closely with 10 nominations each, both competing for Best Picture. Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande earned nominations for Best Actress and Best Supporting Actress, respectively, for their roles in Wicked. Adrien Brody also received a nomination for his performance as a Jewish architect who immigrates to the U.S. after World War II in The Brutalist.
The announcement of nominations faced two delays due to severe wildfires in Southern California, which disrupted the entertainment industry at the height of awards season. The Academy’s annual luncheon for nominees was canceled as a result.
Despite these setbacks, the 2025 Academy Awards ceremony remains scheduled for Sunday, March 2, at the Dolby Theater, with comedian Conan O’Brien as host.
In a letter shared Wednesday and obtained by NPR, Academy leaders emphasized the event will honor the films that bring the global film community together and pay tribute to those who courageously battled the wildfires.
