A Republican House member, Rep. Andy Ogles of Tennessee, introduced a resolution on Thursday to amend the U.S. Constitution, allowing President Donald Trump—and any other future president—to be elected to a third term.
Ogles argued that Trump is uniquely capable of reversing the nation’s decline and restoring its greatness, requiring additional time to achieve these goals.
The resolution, tailored specifically to Trump, excludes other former presidents with two consecutive terms, such as Bill Clinton, George W. Bush, and Barack Obama.
The amendment proposes that no person shall serve more than three terms or seek a third term after two consecutive terms. Trump, as the first president since Grover Cleveland to win a second non-consecutive term, would qualify for a third.
Ogles emphasized the importance of providing Trump with the resources necessary to counter the Biden administration’s policies and restore the republic.
For the amendment to pass, it must secure a two-thirds majority in both chambers of Congress and be ratified by 38 states. The resolution follows previous efforts to clarify the limits of the 22nd Amendment, which restricts presidents to two terms.
While the proposal faces significant challenges, Ogles highlighted its importance in sustaining bold leadership for the country’s future.
