Selena Gomez, a Mexican American, shared a now-deleted Instagram Story on Monday where she tearfully expressed her distress over immigration crackdowns, stating that “my people are getting attacked.” In the video, Gomez apologized, saying, “I’m so sorry, I wish I could do something, but I can’t,” and promised to try everything she could to help.
Following the post, which was later removed after backlash, Gomez also deleted a statement criticizing the lack of empathy shown toward undocumented immigrants. Her video drew criticism from former U.S. Senate candidate Sam Parker, who suggested on social media that Gomez should be deported, accusing her of prioritizing undocumented immigrants over Americans. Parker’s remarks included a call to “deport Selena Gomez,” referencing her family’s Mexican heritage.
In response, Gomez posted, and later deleted, a message on Instagram that mocked Parker’s statement, writing, “Oh Mr. Parker, Mr. Parker. Thanks for the laugh and the threat.”
The video also sparked mixed reactions online. While some criticized Gomez for claiming she “can’t” do anything despite her resources, others praised her for being one of the few celebrities to openly address the raids.
Geraldo Rivera defended her on social media, commending her compassion and sincerity while calling out those attacking her.
Gomez has been a vocal advocate for immigration reform, serving as an executive producer on the 2019 Netflix docuseries Living Undocumented, which highlighted the struggles of families living in the U.S. without legal status. She reflected on her family’s journey to citizenship, describing how her aunt crossed the border in the back of a truck and her grandparents followed. She credited their bravery and sacrifice for the opportunities she has today.
Gomez acknowledged that her advocacy might invite criticism but emphasized the importance of using her platform to raise awareness. “Fear shouldn’t stop us from getting involved and educating ourselves on an issue that affects millions of people in our country,” she wrote.
