Prince Harry, the younger son of King Charles and Princess Diana, made global headlines in 2020 when he stepped down as a working royal and moved to the United States with his wife, former actress Meghan Markle, and their children, Archie and Lilibet. The couple settled in California, but their relationship with the royal family became even more strained after a tell-all interview with Oprah, during which they criticized then-Prince Charles and made allegations of racism within the monarchy.
Tensions between Meghan and the royal family, particularly with Kate Middleton, were already high. One widely reported incident suggested that Meghan had made Kate cry over a disagreement about flower girl dresses at her wedding. However, Meghan later claimed that the opposite had happened—that Kate had made her cry instead.
Public sentiment has largely sided with Prince William and Kate amid Harry and Meghan’s media presence, which has included a Netflix documentary and Harry’s memoir. Many blame Meghan for distancing Harry from his family, viewing her as self-important.
With Donald Trump back in office, speculation arose over whether the couple could face legal troubles.
In 2023, the Heritage Foundation sued the Department of Homeland Security, alleging that Harry misrepresented past drug use on his visa application, which could make him ineligible to stay in the U.S.
Immigration has been a key issue in Trump’s second term, and he has previously criticized Harry and Meghan, accusing them of betraying the Queen and condemning the Biden administration for protecting them.
However, during an interview with the New York Post, Trump dismissed the idea of deporting Harry, saying, “I don’t want to do that. I’ll leave him alone. He’s got enough problems with his wife. She’s terrible… I think poor Harry is being led around by the nose.”
While Trump is not fond of the couple, he did praise Prince William, calling him “a great young man.”
Meanwhile, Meghan has previously spoken out against Trump, calling him “divisive” and “disgusting.” Although there were calls for the Sussexes to endorse Kamala Harris in the 2024 election, they chose to remain silent—perhaps a wise move, as Trump currently does not seem focused on them.
