Google Calendar has removed observances such as Black History Month, Women’s History Month, and Pride Month, along with Indigenous Peoples’ Month, Jewish Heritage Month, Holocaust Remembrance Day, and Hispanic Heritage Month. This move comes amid President Donald Trump’s push to dismantle diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) initiatives.
According to reports, users began noticing the deletions earlier this month, calling the decision “shameful.” Some criticized Google on its help page, accusing the company of siding with fascism and demanding the reinstatement of these observances.
In response, Google stated that the change was made last year to “standardize” its calendar by only including public holidays and national observances listed by timeanddate.com. A company spokesperson explained that manually maintaining a vast range of cultural events globally was unsustainable. Google suggested users subscribe to third-party calendars or add events manually.
This change follows Google’s recent decision to eliminate its diversity hiring goals as it reviews Trump’s executive orders and court rulings that limit DEI policies.
Additionally, on February 10, Google updated its Maps app, controversially renaming the “Gulf of Mexico” to the “Gulf of America.”
