The Trump administration began mass layoffs across several federal agencies on Thursday, following the termination of its deferred resignation offer to the nation’s two million federal employees. These layoffs are expected to affect thousands, particularly targeting probationary employees—new hires with less seniority and fewer protections.
Agencies such as the Department of Education, the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, the Environmental Protection Agency, and others have been impacted. Some employees were notified via email or through recorded messages from their agency’s acting director.
At the Office of Personnel Management (OPM), roughly 200 probationary workers were informed of their layoffs during a call. This move is part of Trump’s broader plan to reduce the size of the federal government.
Prior to the layoffs, agencies were instructed to identify probationary employees, and over 73,000 federal workers accepted the administration’s buyout offer.
