OpenAI’s board has unanimously rejected Elon Musk’s $97.4 billion bid to acquire its nonprofit governing body, citing concerns that the offer was an attempt to disrupt competition.
In a statement shared on X, board chair Bret Taylor reaffirmed that OpenAI is not for sale and emphasized that any restructuring efforts would reinforce the organization’s mission to ensure artificial general intelligence benefits humanity.
Musk, a co-founder of OpenAI, had previously sued the company and CEO Sam Altman, alleging anticompetitive behavior and fraud. His legal team recently stated that he would withdraw his bid if OpenAI halts its transition to a for-profit structure.
OpenAI, however, dismissed the bid, calling it an improper attempt to undermine a competitor.
The ongoing dispute has fueled tensions, with both sides exchanging criticisms over OpenAI’s direction and governance.
