On Thursday, President Bola Tinubu signed two separate bills to establish the Federal University of Agriculture and Development Studies in Iragbiji, Osun State, and the Federal University of Technology and Environmental Sciences in Iyin Ekiti, Ekiti State.
Tinubu emphasized that these specialized universities will address the educational needs of the population, promote research and innovation, and contribute to Nigeria’s economic growth and development.
In a statement from his spokesman, Bayo Onanuga, the president highlighted that these institutions will train professionals in agriculture, science, and technology, helping to boost Nigeria’s competitiveness in the global market.
Currently, Nigeria has 63 federal universities, 63 state universities, and 149 private universities, according to the National Universities Commission (NUC).
Additionally, on February 3, 2025, President Tinubu approved the creation of the Federal University of Environment and Technology (FUET) in Ogoni town, Rivers State. He also approved the federal takeover of a forfeited private university in Southern Kaduna, converting it into a federal institution.
