Pope Francis is in critical condition following a severe asthmatic respiratory crisis that required high oxygen levels, according to reports from the Vatican.
The 88-year-old pontiff, who has been hospitalized for a week due to a complex lung infection, also underwent blood transfusions after tests revealed an anemia-related condition. Earlier, the Vatican stated that Francis had “rested well” overnight.
The Vatican described the pope as alert but experiencing more pain than the previous day, with the prognosis still uncertain. Doctors warned that sepsis, a potentially life-threatening blood infection, remains a major concern, especially given Francis’ age and respiratory issues.
Francis, who suffers from chronic lung disease, was admitted to the Gemelli hospital on February 14 after a bout of bronchitis worsened. He was diagnosed with a viral, bacterial, and fungal respiratory infection, leading to pneumonia in both lungs. He has been prescribed a mix of cortisone, antibiotics, and supplemental oxygen.
Although Francis had hoped to participate in the Holy Year celebrations at the Vatican, he missed a special Mass for deacons, with the Holy Year organizer stepping in on his behalf. Due to his ongoing condition, he will also miss his traditional Sunday noon blessing.
Doctors have indicated that Francis’ recovery will take time, and he will continue to deal with chronic respiratory issues. There has been speculation about whether he might resign if his health deteriorates irreversibly, although Francis has previously stated that he views the papacy as a lifetime commitment.
