Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky stated on Saturday that his country still required Donald Trump’s backing, despite the US president’s harsh criticism during their White House meeting.
Trump accused Zelensky of being “ungrateful” for US military aid and claimed the Ukrainian leader had “disrespected the United States” in the Oval Office. Zelensky emphasized the importance of Trump’s support, acknowledging his desire to end the war while reiterating that no one wants peace more than Ukraine.
In a lengthy post on X, he confirmed plans to sign a long-anticipated minerals-sharing agreement with the US, which he sees as a step toward securing peace and preventing further Russian invasions. He also stressed the need for firm US commitments to Ukraine’s security, highlighting that Ukrainians wanted to hear a strong US stance on their side. Zelensky emphasized the value of “peace through strength” and expressed gratitude to the American people for their support. He ended by reaffirming his desire for strong relations with the US, hoping they could continue.
Following the incident, European leaders quickly rallied behind Zelensky, who later traveled to London for talks.
