This year’s ceremony was hosted by former “Late Night” and “The Tonight Show” host Conan O’Brien. Though he had previously hosted the Emmys twice, this marked his first time leading the Academy Awards.”
“Anora” dominated the 2025 Oscars on Sunday night, winning five awards, including Best Picture and Best Director, at the 97th Academy Awards. Sean Baker, who directed, edited, wrote, and co-produced the film, took home four Oscars, tying Walt Disney’s record for the most Academy Awards won by a single person in a single year. However, Baker’s achievement was unique in that all his wins were for the same film, whereas Disney’s 1954 wins spanned four different projects. While Bong Joon-Ho also accepted four Oscars in 2020, one of them—Best International Feature—was awarded to South Korea rather than him personally.
“Emilia Pérez” led this year’s nominations with 13, including Best Picture, Best Director, Best Writing, and multiple acting categories. Karla Sofía Gascón made history as the first transgender woman to be nominated in any acting category, earning a Best Actress nod for her titular role. However, her Oscar campaign was overshadowed by controversy when offensive social media posts resurfaced. The Best Actress award ultimately went to Mikey Madison for her performance in “Anora.”
Zoe Saldaña, who became the first American of Dominican descent to win an Oscar, won Best Supporting Actress—one of only two awards for “Emilia Pérez” that night. Meanwhile, “Wicked,” adapted from the hit Broadway musical, and “The Brutalist” entered the night with 10 nominations each, both competing for Best Picture, Best Director, and several acting categories.
Adrian Brody won his second Best Actor Oscar for portraying architect László Tóth in “The Brutalist.” When he won for “The Pianist” in 2002 at age 29, he became the youngest Best Actor winner in history. Timothée Chalamet, nominated for his portrayal of Bob Dylan in “A Complete Unknown,” had hoped to break that record. Other nominees in the category included Ralph Fiennes (“Conclave”), Colman Domingo, and Sebastian Stan, who could have made history as the first actor to win for playing a sitting U.S. president.
