Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky expressed his appreciation for the United States and President Donald Trump on Tuesday, seemingly seeking to ease tensions following their contentious Oval Office meeting last Friday.
In a statement on X, Zelensky reaffirmed Ukraine’s dedication to peace, stating, “Ukraine is ready to come to the negotiating table as soon as possible” and emphasizing that “nobody wants peace more than Ukrainians.” He also signaled his willingness to work with Trump, saying, “My team and I stand ready to support President Trump’s strong leadership in securing a lasting peace.”
Zelensky went on to thank the U.S. and Trump for their assistance in Ukraine’s fight for sovereignty, specifically recalling Trump’s past decision to provide Javelin missiles. “We truly appreciate everything America has done to help Ukraine maintain its sovereignty and independence,” he said. Addressing the tension from their recent meeting, he acknowledged, “Our meeting at the White House did not go as planned. It is unfortunate, but it’s time to set things right. We hope for constructive cooperation moving forward.”
Trump, speaking at a White House press conference on Monday, hinted at potential consequences for Zelensky if he opposed U.S.-led peace talks with Russia. “If someone doesn’t want to make a deal, I don’t think that person will be around for long,” Trump warned. “That person won’t be listened to for long because I believe Russia wants to make a deal.”
