The Canadian government is launching 70,000 job opportunities for youth this summer through the Canada Summer Jobs (CSJ) program. This initiative aims to provide young people with valuable skills, hands-on experience, and career exploration, while also offering financial support for education and living costs.
Marci Ien, Minister for Women and Gender Equality and Youth, announced that these positions are available to individuals between the ages of 15 and 30. Building on last year’s success, which saw 71,200 jobs created, surpassing the target of 70,000, the program will open for job seekers on April 21, 2025, via the Job Bank website and mobile app. The available roles span multiple industries, such as recreation, food services, marketing, tourism, housing construction, and environmental protection, targeting sectors with labor shortages. The CSJ program prioritizes young people facing employment barriers, including Indigenous youth, racialized youth, youth with disabilities, and those in rural or remote areas, to promote an inclusive workforce and equal opportunities.
Long-Term Impact on Youth Employment
The CSJ program is a key component of the Youth Employment and Skills Strategy (YESS), which aids young people in transitioning to the workforce. According to an independent audit by the Office of the Auditor General of Canada, CSJ participants enjoy higher long-term earnings compared to those who don’t participate. A 2024 survey showed that 92% of respondents gained confidence in essential employment skills, while 85% were optimistic about their career prospects.
In the 2024 budget, the Government of Canada has committed $351.2 million to the YESS program for 2025–26, with $200.5 million earmarked for CSJ, focusing on critical sectors like housing construction. An additional $150.7 million will be allocated for job placements and employment services within YESS. Minister Ien highlighted the value of the program, stating, “A summer job is more than just a paycheck—it’s an opportunity for young people to gain experience, develop skills, and explore career paths.
Canada Summer Jobs provides thousands of opportunities for youth to grow, contribute to their communities, and lay a strong foundation for their future.”
