Ontario is imposing a 25% surcharge on electricity exports to New York, Michigan, and Minnesota in response to U.S. President Donald Trump’s tariffs on Canada, Premier Doug Ford announced on Monday. “President Trump’s tariffs are disastrous for the U.S. economy, raising costs for American families and businesses,” Ford said in a statement. “Until these tariffs are permanently lifted, Ontario will not back down. We will remain firm, use all available resources, and do whatever is necessary to protect Ontario.” Ford added that the government instructed the province’s Independent Electricity System Operator to require any generator selling electricity to the U.S. to apply a 25% surcharge, amounting to $10 per megawatt-hour.
This surcharge is expected to generate between C$300,000 and C$400,000 ($432,346 to $576,462) daily, according to the statement.
