The House has voted to censure Rep. Al Green (D-TX) after he interrupted President Donald Trump’s recent address to Congress by shouting objections.
Green protested Trump’s speech, arguing the president lacked a mandate to carry out extensive federal budget cuts. His outburst led to his removal from the chamber by the Sergeant-at-Arms after multiple warnings. House Speaker Mike Johnson criticized Green’s actions, stating that such behavior would not be tolerated in Congress. Green defended his actions, saying he was standing up for low-income individuals who rely on Medicaid, which he fears will be cut.
The censure passed in a 224-198 vote, with some Democrats joining Republicans in support.
Green later referenced historical impeachment cases, arguing that impeachment is a tool for holding a president accountable. He warned that Trump’s disregard for legal limits could lead to authoritarian rule.
Rep. Ayanna Pressley (D-MA) criticized the censure, pointing out that Republicans were not similarly punished for disruptions during President Joe Biden’s addresses.
Meanwhile, Rep. Dan Newhouse (R-WA) defended the measure, emphasizing the importance of maintaining decorum in Congress.
