Democratic Rep. Al Green (D-TX) recently filed Articles of Impeachment against President Donald Trump, citing his controversial comments about a U.S. “takeover” of the Gaza Strip. These remarks, made during a press conference with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, have sparked significant backlash from lawmakers and global leaders. Green accused Trump of advocating for actions that could lead to “ethnic cleansing” in Gaza. Trump proposed a plan for the U.S. to take control of the Gaza Strip, claiming it would help stabilize the region. His proposal included resettling Palestinians into “safer and more beautiful communities” while creating jobs and housing in the area, all without military intervention. Trump stated, “The U.S. will take over the Gaza Strip, and we will do a job with it too. We’ll own it and be responsible for dismantling all of the dangerous unexploded bombs and other weapons on the site, level the site, and create an economic development that will supply unlimited numbers of jobs and housing for the people of the area.”
In response, Green called for impeachment, saying, “Ethnic cleansing in Gaza is not a joke, especially when it emanates from the President of the United States, the most powerful person in the world.” Green also criticized Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu for allowing Trump’s remarks, stating that “Ethnic cleansing has been a crime against humanity.”
Five Arab foreign ministers from Jordan, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, and the UAE condemned the plan, arguing it violated international law and destabilized the region, particularly opposing the forced resettlement of Palestinians. They expressed that uprooting an entire population under the guise of safety was unacceptable.
House Speaker Mike Johnson defended Trump’s remarks, framing the plan as a bold step toward Middle East peace. However, Rep. Pete Aguilar (D-CA) dismissed Green’s impeachment effort, saying it was not a priority for the Democratic caucus.
Green’s impeachment attempt, coming just two weeks into Trump’s second term, marks one of the quickest in U.S. history. Green had previously attempted to impeach Trump on three separate occasions.
