President Trump acknowledged on Friday that he was “a little bit sarcastic” when he repeatedly claimed during his campaign that he could resolve the Russia-Ukraine war within 24 hours, even before taking office.
During an interview for the “Full Measure” television program, Trump was asked about his past statements, as his administration continues efforts to negotiate a resolution 54 days into his second term. “Well, I was being a little bit sarcastic when I said that,” he admitted in a preview clip of the episode set to air Sunday. “What I really mean is I’d like to get it settled, and I think I’ll be successful.”
Trump had previously made bold claims about his ability to end the conflict quickly. At a CNN town hall in May 2023, he stated, “They’re dying, Russians and Ukrainians. I want them to stop dying. And I’ll have that done in 24 hours.” He reiterated a similar promise during a September debate with then-Vice President Kamala Harris, saying he would resolve the war even before taking office by speaking directly to both sides.
His administration is actively engaged in diplomatic efforts, with special envoy Steve Witkoff visiting Moscow this week for discussions on a U.S.-proposed ceasefire, which Ukraine has agreed to. When asked what would happen if Russian President Vladimir Putin refused to comply, Trump responded, “Bad news for this world because so many people are dying. But I think he’s going to agree. I really do. I think I know him pretty well, and I think he’s going to agree.”
