Pope Francis, who has spent over a month in the hospital due to a respiratory infection, is set to be discharged on Sunday, according to his medical team. Doctors at Gemelli Hospital in Rome stated that while he will be allowed to leave, he must rest for at least two months and avoid large gatherings or strenuous activities. Sergio Alfieri, the head of his medical team, emphasized the importance of this recovery period. The 88-year-old pope was admitted on February 14 with bronchitis, which later progressed to double pneumonia, reaching a critical stage at one point with a “respiratory crisis,” according to the Vatican. Although he has remained out of public view, the Vatican has provided regular updates, noting that he has been alert, working, and praying.
On Saturday, they announced that he plans to greet the public and offer a blessing upon his release.
Supporters have frequently gathered outside the hospital, leaving candles and flowers at a statue of Pope John Paul II. Pope Francis has faced several health challenges in recent years, including flu-like symptoms, bronchitis, and abdominal surgery in 2023, as well as recent falls in December and January. As a young man in Argentina, he had part of his lung removed. His bronchitis diagnosis was first confirmed on February 6 of this year.
